These hardy people have called this region home for thousands of years. Although the Kurds have no land, they still have a rich culture, history and language that is entirely their own. Their homeland is unique in the Middle East, with vast canyons, mountains and flowing rivers that make the region a green oasis.   <\/p>\n<p>What is now Iraqi Kurdistan was once the place where some of the greatest ancient civilisations flourished. Flight from Helsinki to Istanbul at 19:00-23:55. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 2 \/12.12.12.\/ Erbil<\/strong><br \/>\nConnecting at 02:35-05:15. We arrive at Erbil International Airport, the capital of the Kurdistan Region. After border formalities, we will meet with the group and await transfer to the hotel for early check-in. At approximately 12:00 noon, we will begin our sightseeing tour.<br \/>\nOur first place of interest is the ancient fortress of Erbil. Built on a hill 25 metres high in the centre of the city, the fortress covers 110,000 square metres and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress is considered one of the oldest historical fortresses that has seen the coming and going of nations including Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian. In other phases, this area suffered several invasions.<br \/>\nWe enjoy the city&#8217;s rich culture, historical sites and modern development. <strong>Meals: (A,L,I)<\/strong><br \/>\nAccommodation <a href=\"https:\/\/canyonhotelerbil.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the Canyon Hotel<\/a>, Erbil.      <\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 3 \/13.12.\/ Erbil-Lalish (120 km, 2 hours) Lalish-Dohuk (43 km, 1 hour)<\/strong><br \/>\nWe leave Erbil in the morning and head towards the holy Lalish, a valley and a sacred place for the Yazidis. The Yezidis are an ethnically Kurdish religious minority whose religion combines ancient Persian Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam with local ancient beliefs.<br \/>\nWe will visit the Lali\u0161 temple and learn more about the Yezidi faith, as this temple is particularly known as a place of pilgrimage for Yezidis. The Yezidis believe that this is the place where Noah&#8217;s Ark first hit the ground after the Flood and the beginning of a new civilisation.<br \/>\nLali\u0161 is a spiritual centre surrounded by magnificent natural landscapes. The temple is home to 25 permanent residents. They include a priest, monks and a nun. The temple also has servants whose responsibilities include tending, cleaning and other maintenance of the surrounding forest.<br \/>\nWe continue our journey to Dohuk, where we experience the beauty of the mountainous region and enjoy a peaceful night.<br \/>\n<strong>Meals: (A,L,I)<\/strong><br \/>\nAccommodation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Hotel_Review-g676534-d17377735-Reviews-Dunya_Hotel-Duhok_Duhok_Province.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at Dunya Hotel<\/a>, Dohuk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 4 \/ 14.12.\/ Dohuk-Amadiya (74 km, 1.5 hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nWe start our day with a visit to Amadiya &#8211; an ancient Assyrian city dating back to 2400 BC.<br \/>\nWe explore the ancient architecture and enjoy breathtaking views from the top of the hill.<br \/>\nWe visit the walls and gate of the ancient city and learn about its strategic importance over the centuries. We return to Dohuk.<br \/>\n<strong>Meals: (A,L,I)<\/strong><br \/>\nAccommodation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Hotel_Review-g676534-d17377735-Reviews-Dunya_Hotel-Duhok_Duhok_Province.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at Dunya Hotel<\/a>, Dohuk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 5 \/15.12.\/ Amadiya &#8211; Barzan region (62 km 1,5 hours), Barzan region &#8211; Shanidar (32 km, 40 minutes), Shanidar- Soran (53 km 1,10 hours)<\/strong><br \/>\nWe head towards Barzan, a town known for its rich history and natural beauty, also best known as the home of the Barzan Kurdish tribe. The Barzan region itself is mountainous and consists of wooded valleys. We will visit Shanidar Cave, an archaeological site and also famous for its Neanderthal remains, dating back some 75 000 years. Neanderthals may have buried their dead in the same way we do.   <\/p>\n<p>Later, we continue to Soran, where we can immerse ourselves in the charming surroundings of this picturesque town. The road offers breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. This road is a remarkable feat of engineering &#8211; it crosses five mountain ranges and connects inland to the Mediterranean Sea.<br \/>\nWe continue to Sulaymaniyah, where we can explore the vibrant cultural life. At the Sulaymaniyah Museum we will see many interesting artefacts, some of which date back to prehistoric times. Along the way we can admire the stunning scenery and stop at points of interest to take photos and view the beautiful landscapes. But times have changed! As part of the country&#8217;s plan to rebuild culturally and economically after years of conflict, Iraq has introduced visas on arrival from the UK, the European Union, the US, China, Russia, Lebanon, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.<br \/>\nEU citizens can obtain a visa on arrival at Baghdad airport, the visa costs USD 85.  <\/p>\n<p>Despite its insecure past, Iraq today enjoys unparalleled stability. There is a strong focus on improving tourism and reducing terrorism and violence, and the government is investing in protecting foreigners and locals. We believe that Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan are safe for tourism, but we still observe all possible security warnings. We always recommend checking with the authorities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before deciding to travel.   <\/p>\n<p>The currency of Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan is the Iraqi dinar. The country is still largely a cash society, as card-based technology was only recently introduced. We recommend exchanging new, crisp USD notes. Money changers are very easy to find, and we will stop by to help you exchange notes for Iraqi dinars.   <\/p>\n<p>Although there are a few ATMs in major cities in Iraq, they are often difficult to reach and may not work with your international bank card. In addition, money changers often offer slightly better exchange rates. It is advisable to take cash with you on your visit to Iraq.  <\/p>\n<p>Although Iraq is a predominantly Muslim country, it is home to a wide range of ethnic and religious groups, including Christians, Kurdish Muslims and Yazidis. Iraq is home to both Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims, which in the past has caused considerable polarisation. Today you will find a range of different religious practices and levels of religiosity. In Shia holy cities such as Karbala and Najaf, people tend to be more conservative, while areas such as Iraqi Kurdistan are more liberal. Overall, however, Iraq remains more conservative than many Western countries.    <\/p>\n<p>Iraqis&#8217; conservatism is most evident in the way they dress. Women and men should cover their knees and shoulders. Women are allowed to wear t-shirts or tighter trousers in most cities and there is no need to cover their hair in public. However, in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, an Islamic abaya and full hijab are required. YPT helps female travellers to purchase these items before entering these cities.<br \/>\nAlcohol can be purchased in liquor shops and bars in Iraqi Kurdistan and in major Iraqi cities such as Baghdad. However, alcohol is not allowed inside the city walls of Karbala and Najaf.     <\/p>\n<p>Iraq has both Western-style toilets and squat toilets, and toilet paper and hand towels are a good idea, especially on long journeys.<\/p>\n<p>Iraqis are famous for their hospitality. It is not uncommon for strangers to invite each other to their homes for dinner or tea every day. Iraqis are usually very excited to see foreigners exploring their country, and you&#8217;ll probably even be asked to take photos with locals to share with their families and friends. Iraqis may also ask for your phone number and they may be in frequent contact with you.   <\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that many Iraqi women are very conservative and may be hesitant to interact with men outside their families. However, female travellers are often very warmly welcomed by Iraqi men and women. <\/p>\n<p>In Iraq, marriage is a very important part of a person&#8217;s life, so it is very likely that you will be asked if you are married; even complete strangers may ask this. If you are unmarried, many men and women may suggest that you get married, even to a member of their family. You can always laugh it off, or you can also announce that you are married to avoid unwanted proposals.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"modal-footer\"><button class=\"fusion-button button-default
